Courage Through Fasting
(Based on Esther 4-5)
Queen Esther's Fast
Far away in a beautiful palace lived a brave young woman named Esther, who became queen of Persia. Esther loved God, and she loved her people, the Jewish people.
One day Esther heard terrible news. A man named Haman wanted to hurt all the Jewish people. Esther felt scared. The only person who could stop this plan was the king — but talking to the king without being invited was very dangerous. She could even be punished.
Esther felt the weight in her heart.
What should she do?
Her cousin Mordecai told her:
“Maybe God made you queen for such a time as this.”
Esther knew she needed God’s help, so she made a brave decision.
She told all her people:
“Let’s fast for three days. Let’s pray and ask God to help us.”
So all the Jewish people prayed and fasted together.
They asked God for courage.
They asked God for protection.
They asked God for wisdom.
And God heard them.
On the third day, Esther put on her royal clothes and went to see the king.
She walked slowly, quietly, bravely…
Would the king be angry?
Would he punish her?
Would he turn her away?
But the king smiled.
He held out his golden scepter — a sign that Esther was welcome.
“Queen Esther,” he said, “What do you want? I will give you anything.”
Because she fasted and prayed, Esther spoke with confidence.
She told the king everything.
And God used Esther to save her entire people.
All because she stopped to pray and fast.
“God, thank You for Esther’s courage.
Help us remember that when we pray and fast,
You give us strength and wisdom.
Make us brave to do what is right. Amen.”
